New Music: Slum Village - "Scheming" (F/ J Dilla, Posdnuos & Phife)

Slum Dawg Millionaires: Slum Village

Slum Village -- "Scheming" (Featuring J Dilla, Posdnuos & Phife)

Beats and Tumblr: Beats 'N' Rants

Check out this dope track from Slum Village called "Scheming" featuring posthumous rhymes from the late J Dilla and Baatin, as well as hooks from rappers Posdnuos (De La Soul) and Phife Dog (A Tribe A Called Quest). The song is from SV's fantastic LP Villa Manifesto, which is a perfect rap album. I give the collection four out of five beats (excellent) for its lyrical content and beat selection. Sadly, it's Slum Village's final album as a group.

R.I.P. to J Dilla and Baatin.

New Music: Bun B - "Put It Down" (F/ Drake)

A TRILL-er: BunB

Bun B -- "Put It Down" (featuring Drake)

Bun B released another banger from his forthcoming disc Trill OG (due Aug. 3).

The track was produced by in-demand hitmaker Boi-1da and features the hottest rapper-crooner in the game right now -- Drake. I'm not feeling Drizzy's lyrics, but the song should do well on radio.

Enjoy!

There's No Substitute: RIP Melvin Bliss

"Substitute" Teacher: Melvin Bliss (R.I.P.)

Can we please have a moment of silence for . . .

Singer Melvin Bliss who passed away on Monday (July 26), according to various hip-hop blogs. No additional information was provided.

The Chicago native is widely recognized for his 1973 tune "Synthetic Substitution," which, undoubtedly, is the most sampled song in hip-hop. The list of rappers who utilized the breakbeat to create classic rap songs is extensive.

Every "golden-era" rapper and producer owes a debt to this man and maybe even some back royalties (quiet as it's kept).

Melvin Bliss -- "Synthetic Substitution

Some of my favorite songs that used the "Substitution" beat

Public Enemy -- "Brothers Gonna Work it Out"

The Goats -- "Do The Digs Dug"

The Roots -- "Don't Feel Right"

Biz Markie -- Cool V's Scratching

Ultramagnetic MC's -- "Ego Trippin'"

R.I.P. Melvin Bliss . . . and thank you.
