As I previously reported, one of my favorite tracks on Nas' upcoming album Life is Good is the kiss-off ballad "Bye Baby." And sure enough, Nas released the track today (July 9) for public consumption. The song samples Guy's break-up song "Goodbye Love" from their classic self-titled 1988 album, which ushered in the New Jack Swing sound.
On "Bye Baby," which was produced by Salaam Remi and Noah "40" Shebib, Nas reflects on his 4-year marriage to R&B singer Kelis. Their divorce was finalized in 2010, but not before the couple engaged in a bitter legal battle over child support for their son Knight. The New York rapper paints a vivid picture of love and then loss but, in the end, life is still good for him.
"Listen, could you imagine writing your deposition? / Divorce Lawyer telling you how this thing gonna be ending? / 'With you paying out the ass, and I’m talking half Not some but half. No serious, half' / Half of your soul, half of your heart you leaving behind / It’s either that or die, I wanted peace of mind," he raps.
Nas' tenth album Life Is Good is shaping up to be one of the best rap albums of the summer. Don't forget to cop it on July 17.
